My Tips for Dealing With Anxiety
As someone who’s dealt with anxiety in the past, the last thing I ever wanted to hear from someone was that I needed to calm down or that “it’s all in your head”. I KNOW IT’S IN MY HEAD, that’s the problem! Here are some tips for how I dealt with anxiety, which were far more effective than hibernating, crying, and/or ruminating.
Drop into your body. Press your feet into the floor, feel the chair holding you up, and name three things you can physically feel right now. This is the fastest way to get out of your mind and back into your body/the present moment.
Lengthen your exhale. Breathe in for 4 and out for 7. The exhale is what tells your nervous system you’re safe. If you’re hyperventilating, don’t try to take a “deep breath”, instead go for a longer one out first.
Cold water on the wrists or face. Sounds simple, but it works by activating your vagus nerve, which pulls your system out of fight-or-flight in seconds.
Hum, sigh, or sing. Anything that vibrates your throat stimulates the vagus nerve. Even a long, audible exhale counts.
Move the energy through you, not against you. Anxiety is energy that wants to move, so shake your hands, walk in a circle, dance for 30 seconds, sob if you need to. Don’t bottle it, because the wave only stays stuck when you fight it.
Don't believe everything your anxious mind tells you. Anxiety is a really persuasive narrator with a cruel, tiny vocabulary. The story it's telling you right now is NOT the truth, it's just a survival response with a very loud microphone.
Save this one. You might not need it today, but the moment you do, you don’t want to be searching for it.

IMO misery loves company, so if it makes you feel any better, I have MAJOR anxiety whenever I got to the dentist. I cry every time1
